CARDIOTHORACIC ANESTHESIOLOGY FELLOWSHIP

Loma Linda Medical Center has a large catchment area and serves as a tertiary care referral center for complex cardiothoracic surgery, and management and palliation of congenital heart disease, as well as interventional cardiology. We perform more than 1000 cardiothoracic cases a year with a strong emphasis in coronary revascularization, complex valve replacement, heart failure, and transplantation. The thoracic surgery division performs several hundred thoracotomies each year for management of pulmonary and esophageal disease. We also have a robust pediatric and adult congenital heart disease program, approximately one-third of cardiac cases are pediatric or adult congenital. Our faculty helped pioneer neonatal heart transplantation and we continue to have a strong transplant program. Our interventional cardiology program is very active with ample volume of procedures for structural heart disease including TAVR, Mitraclip, Watchman, septal defect closure and Melody valve. Our electrophysiology program is thriving, we perform hundreds of EPS/ablations every year including complex scar VT with percutaneous ventricular support.

Our cardiothoracic anesthesia attendings are eager to share their expertise. We are proud to offer a diverse clinical teaching experience in adult and pediatric cardiothoracic surgery, and perioperative transesophageal echocardiography, as well as point of care ultrasonography. We value collaboration with our cardiology partners as they offer vital insight to the natural progression of cardiovascular disease and the challenges that present during long-term follow-up.

We value research in our department and we actively encourage and support scholarly pursuits. However, the strength of our program is our ability to tailor the educational experience to each fellow’s unique goals.

The department offers one cardiothoracic fellowship position per academic year, most fellows elect to join us from August through July. We welcome residents who are intellectually curious with a strong work ethic who are interested acquiring advanced skills in echocardiography and intraoperative management. Our program emphasizes a well-rounded educational experience to prepare fellows to be consultants in cardiothoracic anesthesiology. We look forward to reviewing your application.
